WINDOWS XP Tips - MAINTENANCE & PERFORMANCE


A well maintained machine is a trouble-free machine. Here are some tips on how to maintain your PC for trouble free performance.

 TIPS ON WINDOWS XP MAINTENANCE & PERFORMANCE

Defrag

 

Make sure you defrag your system regularly (at least once a month). Click on Start, then All Programs, then Accessories, then System Tools and then Disk Defragmenter. You may wish to cleanup your hard drive first

Report
 

If you have upgraded to Windows XP, get a report by clicking on Start, then Run, type in upgrade.txt then OK

Speed

 

If speed is important to you, the quickest and most effective way to speed up your PC is to increase the memory. If you do not know how to install new/extra memory consult your dealer. To view the amount of memory on your computer click Start, then All Programs, then Accessories, then System Tools and then System Information (wait a few seconds). View Total Physical Memory. Most new computers can go up to 512MB

Adjust Speed
 

This option will forfeit all looks for the sake of speed! Click Start, then Control Panel, then double-click System, under Performance click Settings then select Adjust for Best Performance. BE CAREFUL, it will change the looks

Cleanup

 

To keep your hard drive/s clean double-click My Computer on your desktop, right click the disc drive (e.g. c:\), select Properties and click on Disk Cleanup

System Resources
 

To increase performance you can free system resources. Click Start, select Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools, double-click Services, right-click Indexing Service in the list select Properties and in the Startup Type drop-menu select Disabled

Disable Themes

 

If you are not using any themes, you can free up some RAM by disabling themes. Click Start, select Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools, double-click Services, right-click Themes in the list select Properties and in the Startup Type drop menu select Disabled

System Update
 

Keep your Windows XP up-to-date at all times. Click on Start, All Programs then right on top select Windows Update (requires Internet connection)

Set Priority

 

To increase the CPU allocation resources (set priority) of a particular application, right-click a blank space on the Task Bar, select Task Manager, select Processes tab, right-click application of your choice and choose Set Priority. Do not use if in doubt

Usage Monitor
 

Want to view a monitoring graph of your system usage? Right-click a blank space on the Task Bar, select Task Manager, select Performance tab
